00:00
hey everybody this is russell brunson
00:01
and welcome to marketing in your car
00:04
welcome to the marketing in your car
00:07
podcast where you can increase your
00:09
traffic conversions and sales in just 10
00:12
minutes a day and now here’s your host
00:15
russell brunson that’s funny that crack
00:19
myself up every time I gotta try to be
00:21
louder and more obnoxious each time by
00:23
the what it’s just gonna be boring so
00:26
welcome you guys I hope you’re excited
00:27
I’ve got crazy how r geez happening I’m
00:30
not kind of guy who’s allergies except
00:31
for around cats like I’m deathly
00:33
allergic to cats but I don’t normally
00:36
get him and ever since I’m in back from
00:38
New York from wrestling tournament uh
00:40
I’ve been sneezing like 50 times a day
00:42
under my nose is super raw and like oh
00:44
it’s horrible so I’m hoping and praying
00:47
they’ll get to San Diego next week for
00:50
fuddle hacking live that I don’t have
00:53
allergies cuz that would be horrible on
00:55
stage sneezing every five seconds be
00:57
really embarrassing so sure I could take
00:58
some kind of you know antihistamine
01:02
whatever but those things always make me
01:03
tired and throw me off my game and I got
01:05
to be a cop I game cuz there’s gonna be
01:08
a lot of you guys there so first off
01:10
you’re gonna be there congratulations
01:12
you need to be there’s gonna be amazing
01:13
so there’s number one and number two if
01:16
you’re not gonna be there you missed it
01:17
we sold out you can’t come in if you
01:19
wanted to I’ve been warning and begging
01:21
and pleading for a long time and now
01:23
your shot is done so there you go
01:25
alright so with that said um I want to
01:30
talk about something today that’s kind
01:31
of serious for me right now and probably
01:36
for you a lot of times I’m doing this on
01:37
my way to get my hair cut so by one
01:40
podcasters get my haircut ever since
01:42
then every time I post a video online
01:43
everyone’s like nice haircut nice
01:44
haircut so thanks I guess for messing
01:48
with me it’s pretty funny actually so I
01:52
had my hair cut real quick last haircut
01:53
before the big event so hopefully i will
01:55
look normal when we get there all right
01:57
so uh so on
02:00
what i want i get is out today dang is a
02:03
lot of traffic is is burnout I’m curious
02:10
how many of you guys have ever felt
02:13
burnout so I think the first time that I
02:18
ever got burned out at something because
02:21
typically in your kid just doing a bunch
02:23
of cool stuff all the time right every
02:24
day like a new adventure my kids give
02:26
they get burnt out because they’re tired
02:29
of doing whatever the activity is but
02:31
the first time I ever really really felt
02:33
burnout was my sophomore year in high
02:35
school I was wrestling 130 pounds and
02:39
each week I would check my weight on
02:41
Sunday night and I had on average be 160
02:44
which meant i used had winds on thursday
02:47
or friday and so I had four to five days
02:49
to get from 160 down to 130 and a friend
02:54
of you guys who have ever tried to go
02:56
through wrestling practice it’s not easy
02:58
but the only way that it gets harder is
03:01
you put on plastic suits my dad used to
03:04
call him rubber gear back in the day we
03:06
called him plastics and I was in it but
03:07
it’s basically this plastic suit that
03:10
goes tight around your neck your wrist
03:12
your ankles and its heat impermeable so
03:16
he cannot get out of it so what you do
03:18
is you pair of sweats put a pair of
03:19
plastic on top of that and he put it
03:21
Paris with on top of that and he walked
03:23
into the wrestling room and by timing
03:24
the wrestling room your body’s like
03:26
cooking like like I came I feel my heart
03:27
be beating was really you know it’s just
03:29
it was like tour well then you go
03:30
through a wrestling practice and the
03:33
most I’ve ever lofted Oh in an hour with
03:36
uh with my plastics on was eight pounds
03:41
so you can from this a lot of weight and
03:42
eight pounds of water is a gallon like a
03:45
gallon of milk with eight pounds I think
03:49
it’s wavy pounds yeah I think his way it
03:51
was eight pounds and so that that’s the
03:53
equivalent right side wrestle an hour
03:54
and I’d suck a gallon of water out of my
03:56
my body and so you get done with
03:58
practice you take your sweats off you
04:01
take your plastics often these sweats
04:02
and they would be soaking wet you can
04:04
take them and you could wring them out
04:06
mother water it would flush out of him
04:08
right so every week that was my my
04:11
process way in sunday night 160 at way
04:14
in thursday night for the dual meter for
04:16
the tournament on friday and i’d be 130
04:18
so 30 pounds which it’s it’s not easy
04:21
right because the first practice shoes 8
04:23
pounds i can practice you lose 5 pounds
04:25
their packages three pounds a lot you
04:26
know next practice lose two pounds you
04:28
just don’t have as much water to give at
04:30
the end you’re like trying to lose the
04:31
last two pounds and it’s like a
04:32
nightmare right and you’re tired you’re
04:34
sore and you’re hungry and you’re
04:35
thirsty and actually not you’re not
04:37
typically hungry even though you don’t
04:38
eat you don’t have hunger pains you if
04:41
there’s thirst pains are way worse than
04:43
hunger pains so what we typically
04:45
delight stop eating two to three days
04:47
before the the rest and tournament which
04:48
probably is that smart knowing what I
04:50
know now I probably do things a lot
04:51
different but nevertheless that’s what
04:53
we did and then I stopped drinking 24
04:56
hours before and I would about three
04:58
days before I drink really minimally
04:59
because the water is the weight right
05:01
the food doesn’t actually weigh anything
05:02
in fact foods more like empty calories
05:04
so I tried a heavy calorie food because
05:06
I would give me some energy but then I
05:08
hardly any water because water is what
05:10
ways the most right and so 24 hours
05:12
before you cut out all water and then
05:13
you suck the last little bit and it’s
05:14
painful and it sucks and it’s horrible
05:16
and yeah but in a weird sadistic way I
05:19
really enjoyed it we had a good time
05:21
doing it I think a lot of is cuz you
05:24
know B team you know five or six of us
05:25
all cutting weight together and just the
05:27
commodity and the anyway I miss I
05:29
honestly missed those days in fact I go
05:31
to wrestling tournament now i can even
05:33
NCAA tournament i felt guilty drinking
05:35
water and eating food because i was like
05:36
ah like i’m in a wrestling tourney i
05:38
shall not be eating this is weird I was
05:40
weird guilt so anyway I would go get
05:43
mental help if I if if I was still
05:46
wrestling but I’m not so it’s good
05:48
anyway so anyone going through an entire
05:50
season like that by the time I was the
05:53
in the wrestling season I was I was
05:54
burned out and it showed I’d beaten the
05:57
state champ the kid who end up taking
05:58
state champ that year I beat him twice
05:59
during the year and I ended up taking
06:01
fifth place in the region term didn’t
06:03
qualify for the state term of that year
06:04
and I got went on to watch this kid I’d
06:07
be twice become a high school state
06:09
champ which was my goal and it was hard
06:12
i was i remember sitting in the state
06:14
tournament watching him win and
06:16
and it was it was sad and was
06:19
frustrating and everything and I was
06:20
just burned out I was just I was I
06:23
couldn’t do it anymore and and I
06:26
remember sitting there and and to get
06:28
through that burnout I took a week off
06:30
and I just did nothing so for eat cereal
06:33
and watch cartoon which was awesome
06:35
right and then I went back to rest of me
06:37
to freestyle and greco and during that’s
06:38
the way that I got out of burnouts I
06:40
started having fun with driving fun with
06:45
wrestling again right and so I went to
06:46
the terms I didn’t cut any way I was
06:48
going up by five way classes Russell as
06:49
150 for my freestyle my Greco away and I
06:53
didn’t cut anyway i just showed up wait
06:55
in whenever I wait I wasn’t gets these
06:56
huge dudes and it was good and I started
06:58
lifting and strong and eating and
06:59
getting healthy and i just made a fun
07:01
again and that’s how I kind of got
07:02
through that burnout period um so I was
07:05
the first time next time I really no I
07:07
had burned out bad if you’ve listened my
07:09
podcast in the past you know some of the
07:10
ups and the downs and it was after we
07:12
had 100 employees everything crash we
07:14
had a year of trying to save our butts
07:17
and earn money to pay back the
07:18
government all these crazy things and at
07:20
that point i was i was beyond bernal
07:22
like I did I would have walked away from
07:25
this business if I didn’t have so many
07:26
outstanding debts and liabilities and
07:28
coaching full film and all these
07:30
promises we made people I had to fulfill
07:32
on those things so I kept coming through
07:33
and kept pushing it and I I was a
07:35
burnout I hated it I woke up every day
07:37
hating what I did and what got me
07:39
through that burnout period was
07:40
interesting was one of my friends
07:41
staying in smith who was with my
07:44
wrestling buddies with NCAA last weekend
07:46
but Dagan called me he actually called
07:49
me to interview me on something so he
07:51
interviewed me and then we just SAT
07:52
there and talked for an hour to on story
07:54
selling and all these things and and he
07:57
caught me re excited
08:02
about marketing and about what we were
08:04
doing and how and how we were doing and
08:06
just all the cool things that we can
08:07
invent and do and learn and discover and
08:10
and he he made marketing fun for me
08:14
again and you know on the on the tales
08:17
of that came a lot of amazing things for
08:19
for me and probably for you you know the
08:21
dot-com seekers book came as a byproduct
08:23
that we went through this testing phase
08:25
next year so we’re testing and trying
08:26
and doing all these things and from that
08:29
came the dot-com seniors book from that
08:30
game clickfunnels from that came all the
08:33
amazing things were doing now but they
08:35
came on on the back side of burnout
08:38
which is you know burnouts hard and so
08:43
right now I’m a week away from our event
08:47
and I’m not gonna lie I’m I’m feeling
08:50
I’m feeling burnout you know we’ve we
08:54
had a big mountain to climb we had to
08:56
sell over a thousand tickets which is
08:59
not easy not easy task I remember my you
09:04
know back in the day we do events and we
09:05
get a hundred people to show up never go
09:07
into a Dan Kennedy at one time there was
09:08
a thousand people in the room and over
09:10
thinking this is incredible I cannot
09:12
believe that that’s even possible that
09:15
they have a thousand people in the room
09:17
and just thinking that I was an
09:18
insurmountable task and then that’s what
09:20
we just accomplished and it’s just
09:21
amazing but the cost of that has been 10
09:28
has been burnt out so anyway it’s one
09:31
open em right on the top I my haircut
09:34
starting right now so I’m gonna I’m
09:35
gonna stop this with my hair coming back
09:37
out we’re gonna talk about burnouts more
09:39
because I’m two reasons 1i need to talk
09:42
myself through it to help me get through
09:43
kind of what I’m feeling right now and
09:45
the best way I’ve found to get through
09:47
some of those things is to share with
09:48
others and then number two I know some
09:50
of you guys are probably experiencing
09:51
that right now and hopefully it’ll it’ll
09:53
give you guys I’m hoping some faith in
09:56
what you’re doing and keep you moving
09:57
forward so I will be back with part two
09:59
of this podcast here in about 30 minutes
10:01
alright so where were we were talking
10:03
about burnout and and yeah I’m sure that
10:08
most of you um at least I hope so hope
10:12
it’s not just me go through that every
10:14
once in a while and I’ve had little
10:15
spouts you know but honestly since uh
10:17
since Dayton kind of came back in and
10:20
got me really excited about marketing it
10:22
you know it’s been good and things by
10:24
moving forward and you know I think the
10:26
last two years or so has been more
10:29
intense than normal and part of us
10:31
because you know we had this opportunity
10:33
clickfunnels came and and so a lot of
10:36
it’s like you know strike while the
10:37
iron’s hot they say that thing anyway
10:40
and and we did and we went intense we
10:43
went we gone hard and we pushed it and
10:45
we’ve done some amazing things and it’s
10:46
been just so much fun and so on because
10:50
I’m working so hard I haven’t thought
10:52
about you know you’re focusing on this
10:54
one mission and you’re pushing things
10:55
forward I was reading Gary Vaynerchuk
10:58
snoo book this weekend one thing he
10:59
talks about is is the dirt in the clouds
11:01
you know the clouds is your vision the
11:03
dirts gettin your feet dirty and moving
11:05
forward and work it and that’s if I’ve
11:06
bent like it’s it’s been it’s been the
11:08
the clouds here’s division and then BOOM
11:10
hitting the dirt and pounding in and
11:12
focusing on those two things and and and
11:16
it’s been good and and that there’s so
11:21
much stuff happening and we’re moving
11:22
things for and like all this just
11:24
amazing momentum and so we went running
11:26
with it but this you know the last week
11:29
and a half two weeks or so it’s removed
11:30
towards the event all the things we’re
11:32
doing to push forward you know and fill
11:35
the event and we about to launch funnel
11:37
university and you know click funnels
11:39
and and all this stuff along with new
11:41
sales page 21 day challenge new
11:43
certification program and there’s so
11:47
much more stuff that I had probably talk
11:48
to you guys about this happening that
11:50
that’s all you know we’re at the point
11:52
where fruition where everything’s gonna
11:54
be rolling live now and and all this
11:56
fungal men and over the last little bit
11:58
and I’ve had to stop because you know
12:00
first I trying to finalize finish out
12:02
the my golden issues to finish the the
12:03
new book by the event which didn’t
12:05
happen
12:06
but now it’s like I just stopped
12:08
everything to get all the presentations
12:09
done for the event and and with that
12:12
there’s like the handouts and the order
12:14
forms and that all these like little
12:16
detail things I just don’t I’m not a
12:18
details person but we’re the part of the
12:20
game where the details are what matters
12:23
right and i’m in charge of executing a
12:26
lot of those details because i’m the
12:27
only one that really understands what
12:28
and why and how and all those kind of
12:31
things you know so yeah so that’s kind
12:35
of where where I’m at and I’m not gonna
12:37
lie like I’m starting to feel starting
12:39
to feel that burn out because this is
12:41
the part that I don’t enjoy the most
12:42
which is which is all those kind of
12:47
things right and so I have to slow back
12:49
and all these other projects I’ve been
12:50
trying to get push out push out push out
12:52
before the event I’ve had to stop and
12:54
just like this cannot happen before then
12:56
I’d start cutting things to be able to
12:58
to get to to be able to execute
13:00
correctly on the event and making an
13:02
amazing experience for everyone who’s
13:03
there and and I’m just kind of filling
13:06
it and soph last like four days I
13:08
supposed to be working on my
13:09
presentation and day one I didn’t cause
13:12
focusing on this day two is something
13:13
else to did in each stage just like I
13:15
keep putting it off I think there’s
13:17
probably a lot of pain associated like
13:18
there’s something about the find
13:20
finality that I were like like this
13:23
thing being final like it’s like writing
13:24
a book like when you write a book at
13:26
least for me is stressful because it’s
13:27
like this is it becomes so final as
13:30
concrete it doesn’t change when the
13:31
books done like it is what it is like
13:33
you you don’t change here right if I
13:35
same with isn’t like the presentations
13:37
are done like next step is me giving
13:39
them and this is that there’s so much
13:41
it’s so final that I think I put a lot
13:43
of pressure on it so it kind of stresses
13:45
me out so anyway I’ve been moving
13:48
forward moving forward and and yesterday
13:50
I spent probably two or three hours just
13:52
outlining all the presentations and i
13:54
think i have six presentations i’m
13:55
working on and uh I got I got excited
13:59
because like it’s looking really really
14:00
cool I know what I want to deliver dunno
14:02
what I’m trying to bring a cross but now
14:04
I know now I gotta break that those
14:06
these core concepts into slides and
14:08
powerpoints and images and and things
14:10
that will make this
14:11
all makes sense right in a very
14:14
streamlined format and and you know take
14:16
really complex thoughts or ideas and
14:19
make them simple it’s hard you know like
14:22
the dot-com secrets book was hard was
14:24
like how do we take this abstract idea
14:26
that that I understand and my gut but
14:29
then change it into something that I can
14:31
explain to someone and they can look at
14:33
and bake oh that makes perfect sense
14:34
that’s kind of where I’m at now like
14:36
I’ve got all these amazing things and
14:39
the y after the next two days I got to
14:41
lock myself down and figure out how to
14:42
explain them in a simple easy way and
14:44
get doodle drawings to match them and
14:47
and all those kind of things and yeah
14:51
it’s a lot of work to do with another
14:52
thing I got a psych looming deadline I
14:54
might have done so we get imprinted so
14:56
we can in people’s books by the time the
14:59
event start like all things in and I’m
15:00
not gonna lie like I’m feeling that burn
15:02
out last night about 5 30 of the office
15:05
sides pounding headache and I was just
15:06
like I gotta stop and I gotta go home
15:08
and I’m gonna go home plate the kids for
15:10
a little bit put him to bed and I’m
15:12
gonna come back and you know I got him I
15:14
think him two bed two legs this spring
15:16
break for them sitting in bed to like
15:17
1030 and I just I don’t have any me to
15:19
come back I’m wake up early and come in
15:21
and then the morning came actually I
15:23
don’t wanna I’m not ready it’s like I
15:25
got slept in a little bit but now I’m
15:28
feeling really good and so yeah but
15:31
still I’m em in this phase where I’m
15:32
kind of there’s so much pressure and
15:35
stress and build up and all this stuff
15:36
that I think part of your brain the the
15:40
burnout happens where you just want to
15:41
like you want to like relieve that
15:43
pressure you want to take the pressure
15:45
valve off and just a cough but I can’t
15:47
yes because the big show is about to
15:50
happen so that’s right I’m film just see
15:52
just in complete transparency I’m
15:55
feeling the pressure and and stressed
15:57
and worried and I want to make a good
15:59
experience for those things happening
16:00
and and that’s kind of that’s kind of
16:04
where and I think a big part for me is
16:06
like because I have to cut all these
16:07
things that are important to me that I
16:10
want to have done that I physically
16:11
cannot get them done any more before the
16:13
event I feel a lot of stress and
16:15
pressure and guilt because I have to cut
16:17
these things and I don’t know why but
16:19
that’s kind of where it’s at
16:21
so yeah so so there you go i’m at a
16:26
point i want to film it and i’m sure you
16:28
guys ever felt in the past year there
16:31
right now and so i just want to kind of
16:32
give you some of my thoughts on what i’m
16:35
trying to do to be able to kind of push
16:41
through the burnout because we still
16:45
gotta execute we were seven days away
16:46
from the event starting at the time i’m
16:48
recording this we can’t stop but how do
16:51
we how do we still make it fun and and
16:53
and and then when the events done take
16:57
the pressure valve off so we can keep
16:58
executing and having fun because if
17:00
you’re having fun it makes it really
17:01
hard to to be creative and deliver the
17:04
the cool stuff so here’s my game plan
17:06
first off i have to get through I mean
17:11
that I talked about some recent podcast
17:13
like there’s I have a pain associated
17:15
with the birthing process of these
17:18
presentations right and so I have to
17:20
today and tomorrow I’ve got two days to
17:22
really dig in deep into these so it’s a
17:28
big part of that is is because I
17:32
attached associated pain with this I
17:34
have to I have to attach pleasure like
17:36
how do i go to make fun hunting these
17:38
games would i give myself when i finish
17:40
one what do i how do i how do i do that
17:42
so that’s a big part is that the second
17:45
big part is is in my mind I’d know as i
17:48
start working on these my mind’s gonna
17:49
try to go to pleasure every single time
17:51
is gonna be a lonely chowin let me check
17:52
facebook let me do all those kind of
17:53
things and so for me what i do now talk
17:55
about us again in a different podcast
17:57
but when i switch into powerpoint zone
17:59
i’m basically going to use my treadmill
18:02
desk and shut off everything else and
18:05
just have me walking yeah and focusing
18:08
on presentations right that’s number one
18:11
number two is i have to celebrate each
18:12
of the little winds along the way so as
18:14
i finished one I have to do something
18:15
celebrate either got to eat or store the
18:18
junk food to hang out friends or go walk
18:20
out or check face or whatever that is
18:21
but have big rewards as like as I
18:23
kiddies thing done they’ll push me
18:25
through those pain points second off
18:29
I’ve got to
18:32
ah and the guys as you can tell him I’m
18:35
crating this as we go so I’m trying to
18:37
think through so that that’s a big one
18:38
for me to get to the day-to-day um I
18:40
think when the event is done I’m not
18:42
very good at taking time off like it
18:43
stresses me out but I think I need to
18:45
force myself to I think when i get home
18:47
from the event and you take one or two
18:48
days off and just not do anything
18:52
because i need to take that pressure
18:54
valve off and you know part of me wants
18:55
to do with product launch the tuesday
18:57
after our event i want to launch funnel
18:58
university it’s driving me nuts it’s not
18:59
live yet but I probably shouldn’t anyway
19:03
I still might see how fulfilling but
19:06
taking that pressure valve off so we can
19:10
so we can we can execute right you know
19:13
like I I would I in theory back to when
19:16
I was dressing I would have been better
19:17
and freestyle not kidding you know if I
19:19
would have cut weight during the
19:21
offseason but I didn’t and it was harder
19:23
because guys were bigger and stronger
19:24
than me but I enjoyed it more I had more
19:26
fun and so I think it’s you’re taking
19:30
some internal pressures off I don’t know
19:32
about you guys I give myself a lot of
19:33
pressure probably that that’s unneeded
19:38
but I don’t think about this law like I
19:42
think it comes from my wrestling
19:43
background I can wrestling we’re always
19:46
focused on like who who could be beating
19:50
us right it’s like I could be the number
19:52
one kid in the state but I’m thinking
19:53
about man this guy’s training this guy’s
19:54
training I got it I got to do more than
19:56
them because because I don’t want them
19:59
to pass me right I remember Dan Gable
20:03
who’s one of our sports legends he’s
20:05
like the Michael Jordan of wrestling Dan
20:08
Gable when he was training for the
20:10
Olympics he would work out seven hours a
20:12
day and then he tried to go to bed at
20:13
night but he couldn’t sleep because he
20:14
knew that on the other side the world of
20:16
Russians were weight training and it
20:17
made him sick to his stomach knowing the
20:19
Russians were training while he was
20:20
sleeping so he’d get up and he’d run at
20:21
night and I kind of feel like that for
20:24
me and I don’t know if that’s normal or
20:25
that’s something I got from wrestling
20:27
but you know I feel like right now we’re
20:28
in the number one position in our
20:29
industry where we’re doing amazing
20:31
things but I feel this pressure like wow
20:32
what’s everybody else doing we’re not we
20:35
got to make sure that we are on time so
20:36
I’m putting all this a lot of pressure
20:38
on myself which maybe is undue I don’t
20:40
unnecessary I don’t know but it’s it’s
20:45
what it is so I think I’m gonna try to
20:47
take the week after the event try to
20:49
relieve some pressure on some things
20:50
like that and set more realistic time I
20:54
think goals on things and so that way we
20:57
can make it fun just like free stock and
20:59
reckless fun because I took the pressure
21:01
of weight cutting out and just enjoyed
21:03
the process it’s like how when i worked
21:05
with Dagan again the process became fun
21:08
because i focused on the creativity of
21:09
the marketing and less on the less on
21:12
we’ve got to launch this we gotta make
21:13
money here we gotta you know things like
21:16
that I step back and because we step
21:17
back and enjoy the process it we’re able
21:19
to create some amazing things I think
21:21
that’s really for me the next step is
21:23
after the event because we can’t the
21:25
events happening and we got to make an
21:26
amazing show but then after that’s done
21:28
is how do I take some pressure off so we
21:30
can we can execute correctly and have
21:32
fun time with it and make it enjoyable
21:34
salut don’t burn now so that’s the
21:37
thoughts for me I don’t know I don’t
21:38
that helps you guys out at all may they
21:41
make you think Russell strange maybe
21:43
gives you a glimpse inside of my head I
21:44
don’t know but hopefully it makes you
21:47
guys who are going through any kind of
21:48
burnout 22 Phil Phil understood because
21:53
I I’ve been there I’m going through now
21:55
and those are some of the things I’m
21:57
going to be trying to do to to protect
21:58
my myself so that I don’t hit it because
22:01
bird out burn out especially this point
22:04
my business it’s tough because I have
22:06
business partners I friends I’m
22:07
employees i have staff I’ve team that
22:08
they rely I mean I don’t I can’t let
22:10
them down I can’t just disappear and you
22:14
know kind of step take the foot off the
22:16
gas because I owe it to them as well and
22:17
so it’s how do i how do you manage that
22:19
how do you protect yourself so you don’t
22:21
go through it if you do go through a
22:22
little bit it’s you manage it in a way
22:25
that that actually will serve you and
22:27
your team moving forward as opposed to
22:29
crippling you and hurting you so there
22:31
you go that’s all I got for today at the
22:33
office it’s time for some world
22:34
domination I got to get some
22:36
