00:01
welcome to marketing your car the
00:04
podcast for funnel hackers everywhere
00:05
you’re now part of a small group of
00:07
underground entrepreneurs who are trying
00:09
to change the world through the products
00:10
and the services that we believe in but
00:12
because we don’t rely on venture
00:13
capitalists we don’t have financial
00:15
safety net so we had to do things
00:16
differently we have to do things smarter
00:18
we do that through an art and a science
00:20
we call funnel hacking but this podcast
00:23
will give you a glimpse at the daily
00:24
life of a funnel hacker so let’s get
00:26
started hey everyone is a beautiful
00:32
snowy snowy day I love the snow so much
00:36
fun hope you guys are having a good time
00:37
where you are at in the world and after
00:39
something it’s probably super hot and
00:40
you’re on the beach hang it out which is
00:42
cool for me i am here it driving himself
00:46
since no it’s about twelve-thirty
00:48
afternoon got in late because i’ve been
00:49
writing try to get the book done so i’m
00:51
spending a lot of time at home walk away
00:53
and anyway trying to get things done
00:55
thought people around me and then have
00:56
to go and like share the ideas because
00:58
it gets the energy of everyone my office
01:01
gets me fired up and gets me motivated
01:02
keep right and keep creating stuff like
01:04
that so um but it’s kind of fun like the
01:08
last like three days oh let’s have the
01:10
book down last week last three almost
01:12
four days now I’m focusing on this one
01:15
chapter and it’s the epiphany bridge and
01:18
if you listen to the podcast you hear me
01:19
talk about Tiffany bridge and as I’m
01:21
explaining it it’s tough cuz like we
01:23
explain things like live it’s it’s one
01:25
way you know there’s an easy way to do
01:26
it you guys pry her me explain epiphany
01:28
bridge on the podcast I think the most
01:29
people probably got it but it’s your
01:30
writing there’s a lot of like there’s a
01:33
lot of things you have to fill in
01:34
because your audience may not have the
01:36
context I like when you guys are hanging
01:38
out with moved from context like we know
01:39
I mean there’s just understanding you
01:42
kind of have it’s when I share something
01:43
it’s like oh that’s how it fits in the
01:44
context of like all this other stuff
01:45
Russell’s been sharing with me but a
01:47
book a lot of times you’re in this
01:48
vacuum or someone could be getting off a
01:49
bookshelf they’ve no idea you are and so
01:51
that there’s more like filling in
01:54
between the lines you have to do and so
01:56
like the pivoting bridge like I can
01:57
explain it really easily but it’s like
01:59
to get the full impact that I need like
02:01
I need more so I spent the first night I
02:04
get camera if I told you has not but I
02:06
spent like three hours studying story
02:08
just to get back into that state of like
02:10
how do you actually tell good story lets
02:12
the structure
02:13
I think I mentioned there’s a really
02:15
good audio called the heroes two
02:17
journeys and Michael Hayden Chris Vogler
02:19
teach a story and Michael Hague is like
02:23
a consultant for script writers in
02:25
Hollywood and Chris Vogler does a
02:27
similar stuffer novelists and I kind of
02:30
a resonate a lot more Michael Hague fact
02:31
we had Michael come speak at one of our
02:32
events dating spent the night a couple
02:34
years ago he taught this concept called
02:35
the heroes two journeys and it’s cool
02:38
because like I listened to the audio of
02:39
it and he spoke at our event and I like
02:41
it was cool like it was super awesome
02:43
see story right you look at all movies
02:46
all books like they fall a very similar
02:47
story structure and sounds fascinating
02:50
back then I don’t know how to apply it
02:52
because like I’m not telling Hollywood
02:54
productions a Hollywood movie somebody
02:56
how does this actually has applied to
02:59
our world right and that’s why five or
03:02
six years ago that he spoke at our event
03:03
so it’s just like it’s been kind of up
03:04
in the air for me for a long time and
03:05
this weeks I’ve gone back through it and
03:07
blend looking at and listening to it
03:09
through different lens through like you
03:11
know I have a structure for my epiphany
03:12
bridge story so how does like like what
03:15
like is it the same as the hero’s Qi
03:17
journey is it different like what things
03:18
my missing that should be bringing over
03:20
and like oh and it turns us like Ford a
03:23
geek out session on story which is that
03:25
so much fun but now that it’s happening
03:29
like I’m seeing this clear picture of
03:30
just I get it it’s amazing and so I’m
03:33
gonna get my clay credit for a lot of
03:35
stuff because I am learning it again
03:36
through him and I’m trying to tweak in a
03:38
way that that fits into my my lens that
03:41
I view the world through but some cool
03:44
things i’ll share a couple of my hobby
03:45
i’m probably had to go through all of
03:46
them but cool thing is first off talk
03:48
about every good story there’s three
03:50
core components there’s a character then
03:54
there’s the desire of the character like
03:55
where he’s going the visible desire I
03:57
need it over there and then there’s a
03:58
conflict that’s it so if you have those
04:01
three you’ve got a story so you got a
04:02
character right we’re a little red
04:03
riding hood just desire don’t take my
04:05
grandma bag of goodies and then conflict
04:08
the big bad wolf wants to eat it along
04:09
the way okay and that’s that’s a story
04:11
like and if you have those three
04:12
elements you’ve got you got estoy CIL’s
04:13
the core the three cores
04:14
and what’s interesting is that typically
04:17
as markers we look at the the desire is
04:19
where we try to create desire people’s
04:21
minds right like I want the big house
04:22
with a car that whatever this thing
04:24
you’re trying to get to is I would lose
04:25
weight so like we try to create desire
04:27
and that what was interesting is in a
04:29
story desires not created by the desire
04:33
emotions not created by the desire the
04:35
desire the motion we want in a story the
04:37
emotion comes from the conflict like
04:40
that’s what actually people actually
04:41
care about there’s no conflict people
04:42
don’t care about the story right like if
04:44
my stories like I woke up and I went to
04:45
the and I drove to the office like
04:47
there’s no conflict there nobody cares
04:49
is boring so the conflict is waiting
04:51
what creates emotion which makes the
04:54
story actually interesting and so
04:55
there’s kind of that so you know we
04:57
talked about characters always backstory
04:59
and and and I kind of pulled out there’s
05:01
about five or six ways you can build
05:03
rapport with with a character in a movie
05:05
they try to do those things prior to it
05:09
gets the first temperature on the movie
05:11
so prior to the attractive character or
05:13
the character or the hero everyone call
05:15
leaving on this journey and so the trend
05:17
builds rapport and usually it’s
05:18
happening to spot right and then about
05:20
ten percent into the movie there’s this
05:22
this thing that happens right that takes
05:24
the the is usually physically they leave
05:26
the location that they’re at and they go
05:28
somewhere else right Frodo leaves the
05:29
Shire and he goes on this journey right
05:32
and what happens is there’s always like
05:34
this this visible desire we haven’t call
05:37
us the the journey of accomplishments
05:39
the hero’s first journey the journey of
05:41
accomplishment I need accomplish this
05:42
thing I got to take the ring to Mordor
05:44
and throw it in the lava pit right or
05:46
like every Shore he’s got that right
05:48
there’s this this journey and so that’s
05:50
the during the world watching and we’re
05:51
visible and we’re aware of them weren’t
05:52
we’re going with the character on this
05:54
journey trying to help them to to
05:56
achieve right but then there’s also this
05:58
second in the second journey which white
06:00
calls of the heroes two journeys and the
06:02
second journey is invisible to the naked
06:04
eye we don’t see it like oh cool frodo’s
06:06
got to become a man or what you know
06:07
like we don’t see that piece of it all
06:10
we see is like the the desire where
06:12
they’re trying to get to and then the
06:13
conflict that’s happening along the way
06:15
right and so that’s that’s what’s
06:17
fascinating is there’s a second journey
06:18
happening in that second journey is the
06:20
journey of transformation so first
06:22
journeys journey of accomplishment
06:23
second journey is the
06:25
of transformation than becoming a
06:27
different person so if you look at the
06:29
back story of the story what’s happening
06:31
is that we’re creating the identity that
06:33
this character the leaves about
06:36
themselves right I call it’s all their
06:37
old beliefs or all their current beliefs
06:38
but it’s their beliefs like they believe
06:41
this this and all these things are
06:42
important in they’ve created their
06:43
identity right and and then they go on
06:47
this journey of accomplishment and
06:48
during the process I this journey of
06:50
transformation where this identity of
06:52
who they think they are breaks away and
06:54
these old beliefs fall off and then
06:56
these new beliefs are born and it shifts
06:59
from their identity to their essence and
07:02
essence is the key that’s where we want
07:03
to get to is that the essence of who we
07:05
actually are and helping having the hero
07:08
discover that during this journey and
07:10
what’s interesting is that in good
07:12
stories the hero will will accomplish
07:15
the thing that they wanted to write that
07:18
they went on this this journey of
07:20
accomplishment they accomplished that
07:21
thing but then usually like it doesn’t
07:25
matter they throw it away or they don’t
07:26
care because the real journey was this
07:29
journey of transformation that where the
07:31
character became something more right
07:32
and um and so as I was yes just I came
07:36
the office I started like as you can
07:38
outside mapped on wiping I showed this
07:39
whole thing to a bunch of guys on my
07:41
team and explaining it all to him and
07:43
they never was kinda like well how like
07:45
give me an example of this of that of
07:49
this this journey of transformation like
07:51
and I think it also like it popped in my
07:53
head and I remember the story of cars
07:56
right so cars is and we just watched on
07:58
the disney cruise my kids like 25 times
08:00
so like its top of my free right now
08:01
right lightning the queen is this this
08:05
hero right there’s this backstory here
08:06
all this stuff and and he almost went to
08:08
piston cup there’s three way tie so they
08:10
can do the race and so now he’s gotta
08:11
leave like he’s physically leaving this
08:13
spot during the backstory understood his
08:15
identity was important to him he’s
08:16
rookies and the first time to win a
08:17
Piston cut ba-ba-ba-ba-ba we also see
08:19
his character flaws we find out before
08:21
he leaves on his journey ash doesn’t
08:22
have any friends even Harv his manager
08:24
he thinks his friend isn’t actually
08:25
friend doesn’t rely Kim he’s getting in
08:27
his car and we realized that man he’s
08:29
actually there’s this pain that he has
08:32
and he doesn’t know who he is he’s gonna
08:33
win this thing that’s his identity has
08:35
to win the Piston Cup routes he’s a
08:36
failure in life he the first rookie ever
08:38
so he jumps in he jumps in into the in
08:43
harv and they started on the security
08:45
physical journey leaving the current
08:46
location somewhere else right and the
08:48
the desires to him to go to California
08:50
to win the Piston Cup boom that’s that’s
08:52
the visual visual goal we all see then
08:54
what happens horror fall asleep falls
08:56
out the car gets stuck in Radiator
08:58
Springs and has introduces conflict and
09:00
all this conflict starts happening and
09:01
through this conflict he becomes a
09:04
different person right but then what
09:06
happens at the end of the story he gets
09:08
the ability to go accomplish his desire
09:10
so he leaves Radiator Springs he goes to
09:12
the race he gets anything he’s doing
09:14
this race and he has this opportunity to
09:16
win right and he’s out there racing the
09:18
track to go through and it comes down to
09:20
like the last minutes of the race he’s
09:23
going through and he passes everybody
09:25
he’s in the front and he has become the
09:27
victor he’s gonna win his desires that
09:29
he’s been trying to accomplish this
09:30
entire movie this the whole journey of
09:32
accomplishment is now his he owns it and
09:34
then all of a sudden Chick Hicks hits
09:38
hits the Kings will the King flips up
09:41
boom among car wrecks smashes everything
09:43
he looks up and as he’s about to cross
09:46
the finish line looks up and he sees in
09:47
the monitor he sees the King destroyed
09:50
and he remembers he remembers the story
09:53
about doc and him being destroyed and
09:55
all sudden he realizes and he in that
09:57
moment he changes and he realizes that
10:01
this journey of accomplishment things
10:03
he’s trying to accomplish does not
10:04
actually matter and he throws it away he
10:06
slams on his brakes and stops an inch in
10:09
from the finish line he sits there and
10:11
then Chick Hicks flies past and one wins
10:13
the race and then what does he do he
10:14
backs up he goes back he finds the King
10:18
goes behind him and he he starts pushing
10:20
the King to the finish line and the King
10:23
says Lempa to him he says uh
10:25
he says what are you doing Ricky he’s
10:27
like you rise you just threw away the
10:28
piston cup and then this is we had this
10:31
glimpse of the transformation that
10:32
Lightning McQueen has he says all you
10:35
know an old race car once told me all it
10:37
is is an empty Cup and he pushes the
10:40
King through the finish line and and the
10:43
story and the and and the the hero
10:46
second journey that transformation he
10:48
accomplished it he became somebody more
10:51
something different something better
10:53
isn’t that amazing and it’s like that is
10:57
the that is the the storyline for movies
11:00
right it’s the heroes two journeys and
11:02
when you see it maybe I starts becoming
11:04
so clear that like all these like every
11:06
movie there’s this external journey the
11:08
external desires were going for but then
11:09
there’s this internal journey it happens
11:11
and I want you think about this for
11:12
yourself because we’ll get more than you
11:13
get the book it’ll explain how it fits
11:16
into the Tiffany bridge all other stuff
11:17
but for almost like that that’s our life
11:19
right like we all get into whatever
11:21
we’re doing cuz we have this thing I
11:22
under wrestling because I wanted to be a
11:24
first estate champ that would be a
11:26
national champ right here’s my my
11:27
journey of of achievement like that was
11:32
all I I I live for I thought about I
11:35
that was only thing that and I went on
11:37
this journey and hit my state champ I
11:39
became an all-american went to college
11:40
and like my last goal was to become an
11:43
all-american in college and like my
11:47
whole life everything wrote on this this
11:48
journey I was going on this thing and
11:50
and I didn’t hit it I i fell short in
11:54
qualify for the national turning my
11:55
senior year fell short and it was over
11:59
and i and i didn’t get my the thing that
12:04
i’ve been trying to achieve but then
12:05
like for me as a person I step back and
12:08
I look I said like what happened in last
12:10
12 years of me pursuing this dream and
12:13
like what was the what was the journey
12:15
of transformation for me like who did I
12:17
become because of that life I didn’t go
12:19
on this journey you know I didn’t hit my
12:21
desire if I would have hit my desire
12:23
like like what what was putting my path
12:26
who did I meet how did I change my like
12:29
Who I am how do I become someone
12:31
different someone better because of that
12:32
like if I hadn’t gone on a journey where
12:34
would I be today it would be different
12:36
whole different trajectory but the
12:38
journey of transformation happened
12:39
as I was chasing that desire all right
12:41
so let’s get to business want to make
12:42
money like that’s the desire then what
12:44
happens along the way holy cow you Phil
12:46
you realize and this is true for me you
12:48
realize that the things you create
12:50
actually have an impact on people and it
12:51
can change their life and suddenly it
12:53
shifts from like I need to make money to
12:54
how do I have an impact and the
12:56
transformation like that’s the the
12:58
switch right that’s why some people who
13:00
go through weight loss right this desire
13:01
to lose weight and in the process they
13:03
learned something about themselves and
13:04
then they have so much passion either
13:06
they want sure if other people after I
13:07
become trainers and coaches and experts
13:09
all these crazy things just so
13:12
fascinating so it’s in movies it’s in
13:14
life it’s all over the place the heroes
13:16
two journeys and it’s exciting so that’s
13:19
why got for you guys today I’m almost
13:20
the office I have more i want to share
13:21
but i’ll just save it for another
13:23
another podcast maybe i’ll do it on the
13:24
drive home tonight to have the paper
13:26
right here so um because next time
13:28
looking at like okay the conflict like
13:30
what how do you break down the actual
13:31
conflict is happening inside of inside
13:33
of this this story right well the heroes
13:36
after he’s left he’s left home he’s
13:38
going to sing like what are the levels
13:40
of the conflict i actually have to
13:41
sketch out right here it’ll be in a new
13:43
book i calling it the five turning
13:46
points of conflict and it’s awesome so
13:48
maybe i’ll show that um tonight or
13:50
whenever the next podcast comes out
13:51
least that’s the game the game plan and
13:53
if not then go read my book because
13:54
it’ll be in there for sure anyway i hope
13:56
that is exciting for you guys get you a
13:58
little little pumped up about story and
14:01
i think you through that as you’re
14:04
telling your stories because the end of
14:07
the day no one really cares if the hero
14:10
achieves the accomplishment the audience
14:13
cares that the hero becomes something
14:16
and gets the the journey of achievement
14:19
that are the journey of transformation
14:20
that’s what that’s that’s what we
14:23
actually root for us how we fall in love
14:24
with characters rocky part 1 rocky
14:27
didn’t win right who’d he become that’s
14:32
why we love rocky all right but the
14:34
office guys appreciate you all have an
14:35
amazing day and i’ll talk to you guys
14:37
probably later on tonight alright bye
14:39
[Music]
14:40
thanks so much for listening we hope you
