00:00

hey today i’m going to share with you

00:01

guys eight things that i wish somebody

00:02

would have told me as an entrepreneur

00:04

when i was in my 20s all right before we

00:06

get too deep into this if you’re in your

00:07

20s whatever stage you’re at right now

00:09

is exactly where you need to be so don’t

00:10

stress out

00:11

jeff bezos in his 20s he was flipping

00:13

hamburgers way before he’s ever flipping

00:14

businesses

00:15

and mark cuban was getting fired in his

00:16

20s for listening to his instincts as

00:18

opposed to listening to his boss

00:20

so wherever you are in your life right

00:21

now don’t worry you’ve got time but

00:23

here’s some things are going to help

00:24

number one a degree is not a

00:26

prerequisite for success

00:27

now i do have to admit i did get a

00:29

degree but my degree literally has not

00:31

helped me at all in my journey so far

00:33

i got a degree because at the time i was

00:35

wrestling i wanted to continue to

00:36

wrestle in college i could only do it by

00:38

going to school when i graduated i got

00:39

my degree and i set it down and then i

00:41

went to work

00:42

on my online business and literally it

00:44

didn’t help me

00:46

very much at all what degree were you

00:47

getting

00:49

so i do my degree was in computer

00:52

information systems because i thought i

00:54

was gonna be programmer

00:54

day two of my first class i understood

00:56

nothing the teacher was talking about

00:58

and i was lost which is why i’m so

00:59

grateful that i end up finding todd

01:00

who’s a genius who can build software

01:02

and i can just sell it i also got a c

01:03

in my marketing class which is really

01:05

embarrassing especially considering

01:06

three books on marketing

01:09

take that miss elliot boom roasted one

01:12

experiences that kind of

01:12

made me realize this in college i

01:14

remember i was at my college graduation

01:15

my senior year

01:16

we got the caps the gowns and everything

01:18

we go jam into the gym

01:19

i’m sitting there looking around a whole

01:21

sea of people who are like my graduating

01:23

class

01:23

we’re all sitting there as people

01:24

standing up front talking you know

01:26

talking about graduation and stuff and

01:27

about to call my name

01:28

on stage to get my actual degree i

01:29

remember sitting there realizing i

01:30

didn’t learn anything that was useful to

01:32

help me to actually make money it wasn’t

01:33

a single thing i didn’t learn in my own

01:34

taxes i don’t know how to do like

01:36

another things i would have thought i

01:37

need to be success

01:38

did i learn at school and we’re sitting

01:39

there confused looking around and

01:41

everybody looks so happy

01:42

i was like all these guys have to go in

01:43

the workforce tomorrow and they’re gonna

01:45

find out the real world is not gonna get

01:46

nice to him and i was so grateful at

01:48

that time i had been trying to start my

01:49

own business during college i had

01:50

something happening so i knew the next

01:51

day i was gonna be working on my

01:52

business but for all of them

01:53

i felt really really bad that’s one of

01:55

the biggest realization it has

01:56

the degree the piece of paper isn’t

01:58

gonna help you get a job in most places

02:00

in fact we don’t hire people here based

02:01

on degrees who hire them based on their

02:03

actual skill sets which are completely

02:05

different

02:05

for certain things obviously if you’re

02:06

gonna be a doctor or a dentist

02:08

if you’re cutting people open you’ve got

02:10

to have a degree i would only let

02:11

somebody operate on me who has a degree

02:13

so there are definitely things um we

02:14

need to agree but if you’re an

02:15

entrepreneur

02:16

you’re not going to like school i

02:17

promise you that you’re going to

02:18

struggle because entrepreneurship is

02:19

about creating breaking the rules not

02:20

about following a systematic process and

02:22

so

02:22

if you’re entrepreneurial that’s why

02:23

you’re probably watching this video

02:24

you’re gonna have more success creating

02:26

a vision trying to figure out things

02:27

finding a team building something and

02:28

really having fun with that that’s where

02:30

you’re gonna find your success

02:31

and your happiness there’s actually

02:32

three reasons why i do encourage you to

02:33

go to college initially

02:34

number one it’s where you’re probably

02:35

gonna find your significant other or

02:36

your spouse uh number two

02:38

you wanna stay there until you’re making

02:39

more money than your teacher that’s when

02:41

you have my permission to actually drop

02:42

out and quit and number three

02:44

don’t drop out till you figure out what

02:45

you’re gonna be actually dropping into

02:46

and when you have those things

02:47

then you’re able to go and start your

02:49

future number two you never want to

02:51

underestimate the importance of setting

02:52

goals

02:53

now when i um started my online business

02:56

very beginning

02:56

i remember uh the goal i set was i

02:59

wanted to make a million dollars i think

03:00

that’s most people’s goal but it seems

03:01

so big i was like there’s no way i’m

03:03

gonna be able to hit that

03:04

and so i did the math i took a million

03:05

dollars i divided by 365

03:07

and the number is 2739.73 cents a day

03:11

and so if i can make 27399.73

03:14

a day every single day for a year that’s

03:16

a million dollars i was really excited

03:17

except for the fact that the time i was

03:18

making zero dollars a day i was like

03:20

okay well they’re

03:21

the starting there’s ready to get to and

03:22

i started trying to figure out ways that

03:24

i can make money every single day online

03:26

at first

03:26

nothing happened a little while later i

03:28

started getting the points making ten

03:29

dollars a day and then 50

03:30

a day and then 100 and then five hundred

03:32

and a thousand remember getting closer

03:33

and closer

03:34

until that day when i passed the magic

03:36

number and i was on track to make over a

03:38

million dollars in a year and uh to this

03:40

day that number two thousand seven

03:41

hundred thirty nine dollars and seventy

03:43

three cents is still my favorite number

03:44

because it is the thing that gave me the

03:46

goal what i need to do to be able to

03:47

make a million dollars in my online

03:48

business

03:49

all right number three is you are the

03:50

product of the five people you spend the

03:52

most time with

03:53

that’s true in any area of your life as

03:54

an athlete you’re hanging out people who

03:56

are worse than you you’re going to

03:57

become like them if you’re hanging out

03:58

with people who are better than you

03:59

you’re gonna become like them

04:00

when you’re starting your business and

04:01

your entrepreneurial journeys um the

04:03

people you spend the most time with

04:04

you’re gonna think like them which means

04:06

if you wanna start making more money

04:07

you’ve gotta find people who are already

04:08

doing that your mindset will rise up to

04:10

be like their mindset you’re gonna be

04:11

the equivalent of the five

04:12

people you spend the most time with that

04:13

means choose your friends wisely choose

04:15

your mentors choose the people you’re

04:16

spending time with if you’re not careful

04:18

you’re going to drop down to their level

04:19

as opposed to

04:20

rising up to the level of the people you

04:21

want to be around this was very true for

04:23

me when i started my business most my

04:24

friends

04:25

okay all my friends were completely

04:26

broke and so i was trying to be around

04:28

them and i’m talking about these numbers

04:29

my goals they all like oh that sounds

04:31

nice good luck with that and i remember

04:32

it being hard and then later i found

04:34

and i had to go to seminars that’s where

04:35

i found people i started these seminars

04:37

and marketing events and things

04:38

and i started getting around people

04:39

who’d already made a million dollars

04:41

some people making 5 million 10 million

04:42

and when i told them my goal if i got to

04:44

make two thousand seven hundred thirty

04:45

nine dollars and seventy three cents a

04:46

day

04:46

like oh that’s cute like what do you

04:47

mean like that’s like really really easy

04:49

and i was like are you serious and also

04:50

like my mind went from like my friends

04:52

like this is impossible there’s no way

04:53

you’re tossing like that seems really

04:54

easy like why you said a harder goal and

04:56

i was like oh my gosh and so like it

04:57

just opens your mind you expand your

04:58

mind differently you start looking at

05:00

opportunities differently i started

05:01

looking like what do they do how do they

05:02

do it how do they think about

05:03

opportunities how do they create

05:04

products how do they drive traffic all

05:05

the things they had already figured out

05:07

i was able to look at that

05:08

and model it and very very quickly my

05:10

income started rise to theirs because

05:11

they believed it and since they believed

05:12

in i believed it and belief is the key

05:14

that really drives everything that’s why

05:15

it’s so important to be very careful

05:16

about who you associate with because

05:18

you’re gonna become the product of the

05:19

five people you spend the most time with

05:20

number four you gotta build your dream

05:22

  1. now this is the concept i’ve been

05:23

talking about for over a decade i talked

05:25

about in traffic secrets this is where

05:26

you’re looking at who are the people

05:28

in your industry or the business you

05:30

want to get in who’ve already figured

05:31

out what you’re trying to do right we

05:32

talked about your five closest friends

05:34

this is now expanding it to the top 100

05:36

people who are 100 influencers product

05:37

owners bloggers podcasters

05:39

the people who already have the eyeballs

05:41

of the customers that you want to have

05:42

someday what i do is i go and set it i

05:44

actually create a physical list

05:45

okay here’s all the podcasts that my

05:47

dream customers someday are listening to

05:49

and i write down all the names of the

05:50

podcast those who are the bloggers that

05:51

are blogging that my

05:52

audience is already reading their blogs

05:54

who are the people who have instagram

05:55

following and facebook and i make a list

05:56

of 100 people and after i have that

05:58

this is my future network these are the

06:00

people i need to get to know i need to

06:01

build relationships with because if i

06:02

have those relationships it makes it

06:03

very very easy now to get access to

06:05

their customers

06:06

in fact i create a whole video series on

06:08

youtube showing how i dream 100 a whole

06:09

bunch of people including tony robbins

06:11

how i was able in 10-year period time to

06:13

go from a fanboy

06:14

to a friend to a business partner and so

06:15

make sure you check out that video on

06:16

the channel as well

06:17

number five seek out a mentor now if you

06:20

look at any

06:21

story any movie of all time the hero

06:23

always goes on this journey he always

06:25

finds a guide a mentor somebody

06:26

to take them and show them the path luke

06:28

skywalker had yoda frodo had gandalf and

06:31

you need a guide as well

06:32

a guide or a mentor or someone who’s

06:34

already been here has already gotten the

06:35

result you’ve wanted

06:36

they’ve gotten it and they’re coming

06:37

back and they’ve got a map like a

06:38

process a framework to show you guys

06:40

exactly how to have success and so for

06:41

me in any area of my life when i want to

06:42

lose weight when i want to get shape i

06:44

want to build a business when i want to

06:45

grow my business always look for who’s

06:46

the mentor who’s the person who’s

06:47

already gone there

06:48

they’ve done it they come back and i can

06:50

ask them the questions and follow a

06:51

step-by-step road map it makes your

06:53

success so much more simple

06:54

and so much more likely to happen as

06:56

opposed to just kind of hoping

06:58

and wandering in the woods hoping to

07:00

have success someday one tip on an easy

07:01

way to find a really good mentor is look

07:03

for somebody who’s gone on this journey

07:05

before they’ve come back and actually

07:06

wrote a book about it nice thing about

07:07

that is the book can serve as the map

07:09

and the guide to help you have success

07:11

number two is a book you can read really

07:13

quickly you can read in a couple hours

07:14

and see if you resonate well with the

07:15

person

07:16

sometimes you’re gonna find someone who

07:17

may have done it but you don’t really

07:18

like their personality you don’t gel

07:19

with them

07:19

you can put it away and find another

07:20

book until you find something you like

07:22

and then go deep with that person

07:24

read their book buy their course sign up

07:25

for the coaching programs and get

07:27

mentored by them so you can get the

07:28

success you’re looking for

07:29

the first business mentor i had in my

07:30

20s was a guy named mark joyner

07:32

and mark had just sold his internet

07:34

business for a few million dollars

07:36

he was doing what i was dreaming about

07:37

doing he’d written a couple books i

07:38

bought his books

07:39

and was fascinated by everything you say

07:42

eventually i started messaging him this

07:43

is before we had facebook i was

07:44

messaging him through email

07:46

and through uh messenger whole bunch of

07:47

places and i finally got a hold of him i

07:48

was lucky enough to get him on the phone

07:50

two or three times

07:50

where i tell him where i was at where i

07:52

was trying to get to he would say well

07:53

this was me this is what i would do he

07:54

will literally walk me through step by

07:55

step exactly i need to do to be

07:57

successful and to this day i’m grateful

07:58

for him and his guidance has helped me

08:00

to get to where i am today

08:02

[Music]

08:09

all right number six now this one’s more

08:11

of a mindset one but it’s taking more

08:13

responsibility for your own life

08:15

so many people want to cast blame on

08:16

somebody else oh my boss did this or my

08:18

friend to this for you to be successful

08:19

in life you have to take extreme

08:21

ownership of every single decision you

08:22

make if you fail it’s your fault if

08:24

you’re

08:24

not happy right now it’s your fault if

08:26

you’re not getting things you want life

08:28

it’s actually your fault i know it’s

08:29

hard to hear so many times we want to

08:31

blame it on somebody else but as soon as

08:32

you will take personal responsibility

08:33

then you can actually change it you

08:35

can’t change it for somebody else’s

08:36

fault but if you take personal

08:37

responsibility you can shift your mind

08:38

so you can make changes you can get a

08:39

coach you can get a mentor you can do a

08:40

bunch of things and actually make

08:42

something better out of it that’s why

08:43

it’s so important to understand that

08:44

in fact according to one of my biggest

08:46

mentors in my life in fact refer back to

08:47

tip number five for more information

08:49

about mentors tony robbins has said over

08:51

and over again

08:52

life doesn’t happen to you it happens

08:53

for you if you understand that in every

08:55

single thing that’s happening good or

08:57

bad

08:57

positive or negative these things aren’t

08:58

happening to you they’re happening for

09:00

you if you look at

09:00

that lens now you can say how is this

09:02

going to help me grow how am i going to

09:03

become a better person because of this

09:04

thing even if it seems horrible if

09:06

precision’s hard we’re just making

09:07

somebody else’s fault take personal

09:08

responsibility and then you can change

09:10

and that’s how you progress and how you

09:11

grow i wish somebody would told me that

09:12

in my 20s because

09:13

i think i’ve been pretty good at overall

09:15

trying to take personal responsibility

09:16

but man there’s so many times where

09:17

something wouldn’t happen i want to

09:18

blame one of my staff members you’re one

09:20

of my employees right and blame

09:21

one of my friends or my parents or

09:22

whatever it might be and i i realized

09:24

looking back now

09:26

me blaming those people just kept me in

09:27

the rut it didn’t help me or change

09:29

anything it wasn’t until i look step

09:30

back so look i got to change something i

09:32

put on my own shoulders i was able to

09:33

make

09:33

a shift and change the direction and

09:35

actually have the success i wanted

09:37

me as a now 40 year old coming back to

09:39

20 year old russell this is one of the

09:40

biggest and most important things i

09:41

would tell them is to make sure you

09:42

always take personal responsibility for

09:44

everything in your life

09:44

number seven read expert secrets

09:48

no i’m just kidding but you totally

09:49

should read that but it’s literally

09:51

read read read like you got to be

09:54

reading okay

09:54

there are people that have taken a

09:56

decade of their life they’ve done trial

09:58

and error and problems and figured out

09:59

everything

10:00

they came back they spent a year writing

10:01

a book giving it to you and you can take

10:03

this book you can get a decade of their

10:04

life and you can read it in a day why

10:06

would you not do that okay tony robbins

10:08

once told me that if you take a book and

10:09

compress decades into days and that’s

10:11

what it is and so read a book because if

10:12

you do that

10:13

you’re learning from other people’s

10:14

experiences which is a much better way

10:16

to learn than going through every one of

10:17

these trials and these problems and

10:19

these things on your own

10:20

when i was in my teens i hated reading

10:22

it wasn’t when i turned 20 i started

10:23

reading very first time

10:24

after i found a couple books i liked i

10:25

was like oh my gosh this is amazing i

10:27

kept reading more and more and more

10:29

and by reading you get better at

10:30

learning you get faster your mind gets

10:32

sharper

10:33

and so that way when you’re older like

10:34

me man think how many how many lessons

10:36

how many things you would have learned

10:37

and you can be able to use as opposed to

10:39

if you start reading when you’re in your

10:40

30s your 40s man you missed

10:41

the boat reading often trains your brain

10:43

to absorb more information and it

10:45

expands your brain

10:46

and expands your mind so you can control

10:47

and hold more inside your head as well

10:49

all right and then the last one number

10:50

eight is be

10:52

humble and this is important because um

10:54

i’ve seen so many people who start

10:56

having success when they’re young

10:57

i had success when i was young and the

10:58

first thing that will happen to you is

11:00

you’ll think it’s all about you your

11:01

head will get big you’re like man i am

11:02

amazing like look how cool i am happened

11:04

to me so i know it’s gonna happen to you

11:05

as well so um the biggest thing i found

11:07

is that the first time my business grew

11:08

and it collapsed and it crashed i

11:09

realized it wasn’t all about me it was

11:10

about my team about other people

11:12

around me about ideas i got from from

11:14

god it was from all these different

11:15

things and when you think it’s all you

11:16

your head gets big your ego gets big and

11:18

the crash is hard if i can give you any

11:20

warning any recommendation

11:21

it’s uh to be very careful about this

11:23

especially as you’re going your very

11:24

first time it’s very easy to be

11:26

proud of what you’re doing and you

11:27

should be don’t let it grow your ego

11:28

because if it does that

11:29

it’s gonna be hard for you and the

11:30

people around you and it’s not all about

11:31

you you’ll find that out soon enough

11:33

and so that’s it those are my eight tips

11:34

for people who are in their 20s which

11:36

hopefully if you’re watching this you’re

11:37

probably your 20s right now i’m coming

11:38

to you from 40 year old russell to come

11:39

back and share these ideas with you if i

11:41

say one last thing

11:42

is i want you to understand that this

11:44

journey of entrepreneurship

11:45

it’s fun it’s really hard though there’s

11:47

gonna be there’s ups there’s gonna be

11:48

downs but the key is if you really

11:50

believe in what you’re doing if you

11:51

believe

11:51

that you are changing people’s lives

11:52

through your businesses that’s how you

11:55

last for a long time i’ve been doing

11:56

this for so long i’ve seen so many

11:58

people who have started businesses and

11:59

then they’ve disappeared i haven’t seen

12:00

them since i’ve seen a few people

12:02

who’ve gone now for two decades or more

12:04

and the difference is the people who

12:05

love and they serve their customers the

12:06

highest level those ones are still

12:08

around

12:08

people who are here try to make a quick

12:09

buck try to make money are the ones who

12:11

they aren’t anymore and so make sure you

12:12

focus on who

12:13

is the customer you want to serve how

12:14

can i help them and then from there your

12:16

ideas of being an entrepreneur are going

12:17

to grow

12:18

you’re going to think of ideas of

12:19

products and services and it might be

12:21

software and creator maybe write a book

12:22

or maybe

12:22

create supplements like all the ideas

12:24

will come when you focus on who is your

12:25

dream customer how can you change their

12:27

life focus on that here in your 20s by

12:28

time you’re my age you’ll have an empire

12:30

and you’ll be able to change a lot of

12:31

people’s lives around the world all

12:32

right with that said thank you so much
