the marketing space for the past 15

years and I still own that agency and

it’s a you know it’s a great business

and and I love marketing I mean that’s

what drew me to Joe’s genius Network in

the beginning you know in the first

place

but about a year and a half ago I

reached a point in my life where I sort

of was looking for more meaning and

purpose in my life owning an agency is

great and I’m grateful for it but I you

know I found myself they work

harder and longer to try to achieve more

and I and I had a warped idea I believe

in hindsight looking back at what

success meant and you know as the victim

of horrific bullying back in middle

school I developed a me versus the rest

of the world mentality and so my way
02:32
it’s sort of proving to myself that I
02:35
was worth something frankly was to
02:37
achieve material success and so I found
02:41
myself competing at everything I did
02:43
from middle school on I wanted to be the
02:46
best at everything I needed to win at
02:47
everything and I thought that my
02:49
accumulation of material success would
02:52
would finally be the answer that I was
02:54
looking for and it would really sort of
02:56
wipe out the pain that I had experienced
02:59
all those years ago pain that I buried
03:01
so deep down inside that I really wasn’t
03:03
even aware that it was still my driving
03:06
force so I had this intensely
03:08
competitive nature and what happened was
03:11
about a year and a half ago you know I
03:14
found myself or my whole my whole life I
03:17
found myself setting goals and meeting
03:19
those goals and then setting hiring
03:20
goals and meeting those goals and while
03:22
that is good and we all want to meet
03:24
achieve our goals my intent with each of
03:28
these goals Abe was was that I would
03:29
finally feel self validation right I
03:32
would reclaim the self-worth that had
03:34
been stripped away from me years ago but
03:36
what happened was every time is exceeded
03:39
that success would vanish just as
03:41
quickly as it came it was fleeting and
03:43
you know I say now again everything is
03:46
crystal clear in hindsight that success
03:48
gained on the competitive plane of
03:50
existence is fleeting it’s not lasting
03:52
it doesn’t really exist and so just as
03:54
quickly as it came it believed and I
03:56
found myself lacking lacking time you

know with those I loved lacking time
04:02
lacking purpose and meaning in my life
04:05
as I just kept chasing these exterior
04:06
goals to try to mask the hurt that I had
04:10
been burying for so long so about a year
04:12
and a half ago I really started to open
04:14
up these wounds and I allowed myself to
04:17
question the path that I was on in my
04:20
intense quest to achieve outward
04:23
external successes
04:26
and it was on this path of
04:28
self-discovery which by the way began as
04:30
a very very personal journey it’s all
04:34
personal that I didn’t believe and share
04:36
it with my husband at the time I just
04:38
knew deep down inside that there had to
04:40
be more in life the success in business
04:43
where we’re all business before all
04:44
entrepreneurs who we want to succeed and
04:46
that’s great I stand behind that I love
04:49
you know being an entrepreneur I love
04:51
being surrounded by entrepreneurs but
04:53
it’s not just about chasing the dollar
04:55
the dollar for me used to be the end
04:58
rather than a means to the end and the

means to something much bigger much more
05:02
powerful until I started to question my
05:05
purpose in life my meaning in life you
05:08
know and and what I was really put on
05:09
earth to do and it was that journey
05:12
which we can dive in but rather they
05:14
just keep rambling it was really that
05:16
journey of self transformation that led

to the creation of my current give a
05:24
shift process which is the exact process

I use to transform my life from one of
05:29
lack and limitation to one of more
05:31
abundance than I ever dreamed possible

well I know that a lot of entrepreneurs
05:36
kind of go through some of the similar
05:38
type of feelings that you’ve had I think
05:40
a lot of us have this idea as far as you
05:42
know I’m going to prove it to everybody
05:43
else and I think a lot of us are driven
05:45
by that but the desire to make sure
05:48
everyone else sees a listen you know
05:50
what I can I can become successful I
05:52
know I’ve got this in me and I want to
05:53
make that happen so I definitely need
05:55
that understand that for sure Megan I’m
05:57
sure you’ve seen that as well as a lot
05:59
of be entrepreneurs you’ve coached yeah

absolutely and you know what I found is
06:04
that the term bullying is really
06:06
misleading see when I address a group of
06:08
people and I have an audience and I ask
06:10
them in the beginning to raise their
06:12
hand if they’ve ever been bullied really
06:14
a small percentage raises their hands
06:16
maybe 10 15 % of people but what what I
06:20
then describe as bullying is really a
06:23
much broader term than one is led to
06:25
believe we all think it is in the sense
06:27
that I was bullied which is a middle
06:29
school peer-to-peer bullying but if you
06:31
step back and think about what bullying
06:32
means which is that someone else has
06:34
tried to make someone else another human
06:37
being feel less than or try to control
06:39
another
06:40
human being and in doing so has
06:41
blemished their self horse and their
06:43
self-confidence then we can look at
06:44
bullying in a much broader term right so
06:46
I’ve seen along my life coaches bully
06:49
athletes right and many people can
06:51
relate to that
06:52
so some I see I see parents bullying
06:55
children pushing them around and and
06:57
really you know pushing putting them
06:59
into a boxing and really blemishing

again their self-worth and I’ve seen
07:03
spouses bully each other and girlfriends
07:05
fool each other employee bully employers
07:08
and bully employees so that when we
07:11
frame it that way and then I react the
07:13
question how many people can relate to
07:14
is an experience of pain where someone
07:16
else has tried to make you feel less
07:18
than or try to keep you down
07:20
I get nearly 100 percent of respondents

raise their hand and so when that
07:24
happens to someone at whatever point
07:26
along their life that happens we get
07:29
that sort of competitive edge it’s sort
07:31
of like you know what I’m going to show
07:32
you right it’s that me versus the world
07:34
or or that I’m going to show you
07:36
mentality and you know to be honest with
07:38
you gave that is that is definitely the
07:40
case with so many entrepreneurs so many
07:42
entrepreneurs go into business yes they
07:46
love what they do just like I love
07:47
marketing and that so I started the
07:49
agency but it was really to prove to
07:51
others and myself that I could do it
07:54
there was this competitive need to show
07:56
and to prove myself to the world and
07:59
again to sort of reclaim the confidence

that had been stripped away and that
08:03
you’re right is prevalent among amongst
08:05
the entrepreneurial community for sure
08:08
so how do you actually as an
08:10
entrepreneur I mean obviously least I
08:13
know in my own life part of that has
08:15
actually been a driving force that and
08:16
helped me achieve some of that success
08:18
that I’ve had but have you also used
08:21
that and to at your advantage I guess
08:23
what’s the best way of of using the
08:27
negative things you’ve had in your past
08:29
basically to actually help build you and
08:31
help make sure that your business is
08:32
rock-solid as possible yeah and that’s a
08:35
great point and that’s what I had to
08:37
learn along the way and that was part of
08:39
my journey see something else that most
08:41
people are led to believe are what I
08:44
call life’s 5 biggest bull shift now we
08:48
are led to believe these at various
08:50
points in our life and some people are
08:52
made to believe them too great
08:54
degrees than others and these bull
08:55
shifts consist of 5 myths that shape so
08:59
many of our life and bullshit number one
09:01
is the belief that life is handed to you
09:03
and there’s nothing you can do about it
09:05
so that was the belief that I have and
09:07
that many other people have I sort of
09:10
just felt that life was the result of
09:12
good or bad luck and I got dealt a
09:15
crappy can’t crappy hand of cards in
09:18
life and the only way to overcome that
09:20
was with pure Drive and pure passion and
09:24
pure refuses to lose that anything I did
09:28
so so I see so many people walking
09:31
around their lives believing that life
09:32
is just sort of handed to them and
09:34
there’s nothing they can do but most
09:36
people don’t even try to do anything
09:37
about it in the entrepreneurial world we
09:39
just try to use our share grit and grind
09:41
to try to overcome the deck of cards
09:44
that we think it’s been handed to us
09:46
bull ships number two is that again to
09:49
get anything in life you have to compete
09:50
fiercely for it because we believe that
09:54
we’re all vying for the this our you
09:56
know our share of a finite camp small

pie that exists out in the world and I
10:02
know that that’s what I did and
10:03
especially in an environment like market
10:07
a marketing agency out here on the East
10:08
Coast it’s quite cutthroat and you know
10:10
we’re all competing for the same pitch
10:12
we’re all competing for the same clients
10:14
and if one one agency wins and another
10:16
loses it’s as if you know there’s less
10:19
of that pie available for us
10:22
bull ship to number three is that we
10:24
shouldn’t ask for our more than our fair
10:26
share in life because there isn’t enough
10:27
to go around so you know tell me if you
10:31
can relate to this but it coupled with
10:33
our innate desire to achieve and win
10:36
especially as entrepreneurs we also have
10:38
this nagging feeling that gosh am I
10:41
somehow being selfish or greedy because
10:43
I want more in life you know is it when
10:46
we win we’re taking something away from
10:47
someone else you know my parents
10:50
ingrained that in my brain come in early
10:53
early early on as if you know the
10:56
universe is sort of this set of
11:00
resources and whatever is here is here
11:01
and we’ve all got to share the resources
11:03
because there isn’t enough to go around
11:05
so that was a very limiting belief and
11:07
that was oh
11:07
direct conflict to my desire to achieve
11:09
and win and grow so I found myself
11:12
really in a quagmire of belief systems
11:15
which led me down the path of
11:17
destruction that I ultimately found
11:19
myself on bull ship number four is that
11:22
our thoughts really have no bearing on
11:23
our reality and I don’t know how many of
11:26
how many listeners out there believe
11:27
that maybe I’m in the minority there but
11:30
for my whole life I thought as long as I
11:32
act properly on the outside then it
11:34
matters very little what I think on the
11:37
inside and so when you operate from the
11:39
competitive plane of existence
11:40
what sort of feelings do you find
11:42
yourself having often their feelings of
11:44
envy and jealousy right and so you find
11:48
yourself doing doing the right thing on
11:50
the outside and smiling and acting
11:52
politely but you have these burning
11:54
feelings of envy and jealousy on the
11:55
inside and those are really really
11:57
poisonous and in fact the thoughts are
11:59
much more powerful than the actions
12:02
themselves and bull shift number five
12:06
which is sort of a silly one but but
12:08
it’s a but it’s one that I find a lot of
12:10
people live in even if they don’t admit
12:12
it is the curse of the jinx and so again
12:15
as entrepreneurs entrepreneurs who have
12:17
gone through some type of struggle who
12:19
are doing everything they can to achieve
12:21
and when we still have that blemish
12:24
self-confidence and so we don’t really
12:26
allow ourselves to envision ourselves as
12:28
abundant successful happy people we sort
12:32
of set ourselves up for disappointment
12:33
so that when the disappointment happens
12:36
we say ah see I told you so but what we
12:38
don’t understand at the time is that the
12:40
belief that the thing the good thing
12:42
won’t happen is what actually prevents
12:44
it from happening in the first place so
12:46
I had to in order to heal and go from
12:50
from sacrificing lack to abundance and
12:53
affluence I had to replace each of those
12:56
bull shifts with what I call a universal
12:58
truth in order to heal and and put the
13:01
pieces back together sort of like Humpty
13:03
Dumpty right before you can put the hot
13:04
pieces back together you’ve got to look
13:06
at the fog from your eyes and replace
13:09
these limiting beliefs with the
13:11
universal truth and each time you do
13:14
it’s like a shackle has been broken off
13:16
your wrist at least that was the
13:17
experience for me it was like each time
13:19
I was able to bust
13:21
of those bull shifts it’s like the light
13:23
became brighter the fog started lifting
13:25
and I could see clearly now to a whole
13:27
new world of possibilities that I didn’t
13:29
even know existed before and then I was
13:32
able to create the system that I used to
13:35
transform my life
13:36
they still use every single day and that
13:38
I teach to people all over the all over
13:41
the country to do the same ups antacid

easier taking your personal experiences

like a gun and are going out and

things really we look at from a

marketing angle is is this more of a

soft topic or or of a hard topic any

time starting you’re doing on some of

the thoughts or emotional things people

always assume that’s more of a soft

topic and how do you sell a soft topic

versus a heart you know hard topic means

something that’s physical that I can
14:16
actually you know touch and move and in

position as a marketer how do you what

have been some of the things that you’ve

been using to actually market and sell

give us yeah well I have I definitely am

seminar and we feel so jazzed up about

the content that was delivered but we

don’t know how to apply it to our own

to me the other the other mistake that I

see people make is that they have

off of each other it’s almost like

they’re in their own silos and so when

that happens just like with any

marketing effort I believe you get

marketing fragmentation and that leads

to confusion in the marketplace and

buyers and consumers frankly don’t know

where to go and what to choose and it’s

not intuitive for them to proceed from

one funnel to the next it requires work

on their part and as a marketer that’s
21:38
something you want to try to avoid we

don’t want the buyer to have to try to
21:42
find us or try to figure out where to go

next or work to get go deeper with us or
21:47
worse want to go deeper and reach a dead

end I love that oh my gosh that is such

great advice

and I think you’re right again I know

you’ve seen it with your clients in the

past and we run across all the time

where you do have these marketing silos

where people have no idea where to go

next and I think again I love what

you’ve done literally from whether it

starts off at the infographic and the
22:09
opt-in from there that goes into them

ends up that the high end coaching the

great thing is you can start anywhere in

key is to have some vision when you’re

person falls in love with you they want

to keep spending money with you I think

the biggest of all most of us make is

they you stop creating products allowing

people to spend more and more money with

you and I know I’ve seen your your

guess it’s one the dating now see all

the way says to marriage and everything

else after that so I think it’s angry

exactly that’s right yeah these are

critical legacy yeah that’s right you

know when people fall in love with you

they want to hold your hand and stay

with you for the duration they don’t

want to go and try to find somebody else

to satisfy their needs they just they’re

comfortable with you and so you know

even if you start up small and you

launch you know one of your early stage

funnels you have to do it at least have

the products thought out in your mind

about where you’re going to go next and

get those other funnels into creation as

soon as possible because if someone is

in that buying mentality and they reach

a dead end with you they sort of lose

their steam and even if then you know

even if they don’t go and find someone

else to date at that moment in time

they’re kind of annoyed with you they

don’t necessarily they might give you

the cold shoulder you sort of had your

chance with them and so you want to make

sure as a marketer that you’re

constantly feeding the need for people

to go deeper with you if they so choose
