I started a software company a few years ago

called ClickFunnels.com, you may have heard of it.

is that when I got started initially,

the first thing I sold, I talk about it with Tony,

was a DVD teaching people how to make potato guns, yes.

And so that’s how I got started, selling things like this.

  • I’ve known Russell for about,

I think about 15 years, 14, 15 years now.

I’ve got to know him really well over the last decade or so

and what I love about Russell is, you know,

so many people are looking for ways to maximize the business

or to find a way to produce a secondary income

and most of the stuff that you see online

is disappointing would be the nicest word

I could give for it. (laughing)

There’s just so many scams, there’s so much B.S.,

and what I love about Russell

and the reason I wanted to introduce you two briefly today

is he has a new book out called Expert Secrets.

  • And, and it, it just, what I love about Russell is just,

Why don’t you share with my audience a little bit here about

how you got started in this business

and a little bit of your approach to

and how it differs from so many other people out there.

  • Yeah, so. (laughs)

I actually got started in this business,

02:12

man, it’s been, feels like yesterday

02:14

but it’s been, you know, 10, 15 years now.

02:16

And it’s funny 'cause I,

02:18

I was the same way a lot of people were,

02:19

I didn’t know a lot about business,

02:20

I was tryin’ different things

02:21

and learning from different mentors,

02:23

and, and one of the very first things I ever created,

02:25

in fact I sent you the first one I made, actually,

02:27

was a potato gun.

02:28

And we’re making those for fun,

02:30

and we had so much fun makin’ potato guns

02:31

and shooting 'em and having just like,

02:33

the time of our life, and then one day,

02:35

I, they did like, I wonder if anyone else besides me

02:37

is interested in information about potato guns?

02:40

And there was nobody out selling any plans

02:41

or DVDs or anything, and so I thought,

02:43

there’s my first opportunity,

02:45

I’m gonna become a potato gun expert.

02:47

And we went and made a potato gun DVD,

02:50

my friend and I recorded it,

02:51

put it online and started selling it.

02:52

And it never made me rich,

02:54

but it was the first thing I sold online

02:55

which started makin’, you know, 20 or 30 dollars a day

02:57

and it was like, the coolest thing in the world.

And, and to see people like,

take what you knew and actually do something with it.

And that’s, for me it’s how it began.

And, and then obviously my, I didn’t want my rest of my life

to be known as a potato gun expert,

03:08

(laughing) as much fun as that, that is,

03:11

and I’m still into that business, or into that hobby, but.

That’s how it kinda began and then I started branching out.

And, and it.

The kinda my next obsession,

I started finding other people that were really good

03:20

and I was like, “Man, these.”

03:21

Like, one of my friends,

03:22

I don’t know if you know Howard Berg now,

world’s faster reader, we partnered with him and I was like,

03:25

"You’re the world’s fastest, let’s like,

03:26

“let’s create informations, like, selling what you do.”

03:28

And he, and we did projects together

03:30

selling his information to other people’s and,

03:32

and I started getting obsessed with like,

03:33

helping other people to like,

03:35

take what they knew and what they were good at

03:36

and put it out there and, and sell it.

03:37

And, and then out of the most recent years,

03:39

obviously we’ve been teachin’ a lot of people doin’ that,

03:41

we’ve got software that helps people with it,

03:43

but that’s kinda the, kinda the backstory.

  • Well you, you, you know, you’ve grown so massively,

03:48

you’ve got 'em, you’ve serviced every service,

03:49

almost a million business-owners over the last 10 years?

03:52

  • Yeah, we’ve been over that now, yeah.

03:54

  • That’s amazing.

03:56

And then you created ClickFunnels,

03:57

we’ll talk about it as well but,

03:58

tell me about how do you differentiate yourself

from so many people online?

04:01

Everybody on the line jumps online,

04:03

everybody’s got some hook that they’re tryin’ to use

04:05

to sell somebody something.

04:06

You know, you’ve really differentiated yourself,

I’ve found over the years.

04:10

What, what do you think has separated you from the others?

  • I think a lot of people get into business initially

04:13

'cause they wanna make money, which is a good thing,

04:15

that’s what usually start, like spurs entrepreneurship, but.

For me, what I found, I talk about this actually

04:20

in the very first section of the book

04:21

to kind of give people context,

04:22

because then ultimately

04:23

people feel guilty about that as well.

04:25

But I know for me like, I was, I was learning,

04:27

I was growing, and like, there came a point in my life where

04:29

like no matter how much I kept learning,

04:31

like, eventually you kinda stop,

04:32

like it’s hard to keep progressing?

04:34

Just by learning itself.

04:35

And I had some big wins, I had successes, and it was like,

04:37

I love celebrating 'em.

04:38

And then the first time I started,

04:39

like, helping other people and it’s like,

04:41

"Hey, I’m gonna, like, the stuff I’ve learned,

04:42

“let me help you with it.”

04:43

And, and I’d, I’d help people and they’d see their success

04:46

and I, I’m sure you’re the same way, like,

04:47

when you see someone else have success,

04:49

it is a million times cooler than your own success.

04:51

And like, for me I got addicted to that, I’m like, "Okay,

04:53

"that was awesome, like,

04:55

“who else can help and how else can I help?”

04:56

And, and my whole focus shifted from like,

04:58

you know, how do I start a business, make money, to like,

these people have messages,

05:01

they’ve got things that they can,

05:03

that they know that they can change other people’s lives,

05:04

and I might not be the world’s fastest reader,

05:06

I might not be someone who’s good at

05:08

personal development or finance or any of those things,

05:10

I might not be the best at it, but if I can,

05:12

like, my, my gifts, my tools,

05:13

if I can help them to get their message out,

05:16

man, like how many more people can we, can we impact,

05:18

and so that’s why I love working with entrepreneurs

05:20

because it’s like, one entrepreneur can change

05:22

hundreds or thousands or tens of thousands of people’s lives

05:24

and it’s just, it’s so much fun.

  • What’s been one of the biggest campaigns that you’ve run

05:31

to give people a sense of what the economic opportunity is,

05:33

and then I wanna follow up and get in to

05:35

a little bit about the different types of,

05:36

you know, expert businesses, but.

05:38

Tell us a story of one of,

05:39

what’s been one of the big surprises?

05:41

I know the potato gun’s where you started,

05:42

but what were the big hits you’ve got,

05:44

what kind of return did you get,

05:45

just to give people a sense of what’s possible

and I’m, and I remember you telling me how

05:48

crazy you were over several of these stories,

05:50

and give me one.

05:51

  • So many cool ones.

05:52

So I’ll share one of, one of my favorite, they’re,

they’re a younger couple, they are I think 22, 23,

05:57

they just got married.

05:59

Brandon and Kaelin, in fact, when you spoke at our event,

she was the one that had the Prada purse

06:02

that you kinda teased.

06:03

  • Oh, yes, I remember that, yes.

06:05

(laughing)

06:06

  • So she’s like, the coolest couple, the newlywed couple.

06:08

And the first time they met me,

06:10

they messaged me and they’re like, "We’re completely broke,

06:11

“we have nothing, some day we’re gonna be a success story.”

I was like, “All right, cool.”

06:15

And then a year later they came to our event

06:17

and they came up to me and they’re like,

06:18

“Hey right now we’re doin’,”

06:19

I think it was 80 grand a month right now,

06:20

helping women to, to,

06:22

to transform their bodies through weight loss.

06:23

And I was like, “That’s cool.”

06:25

And then they started going deeper and deeper into this.

And one of my favorite things is

they did a Facebook Live two months ago,

06:30

following kind of the process we teach in this book.

They did the Facebook Live and it went live and,

06:36

two things, number one, that Facebook Live they did,

06:38

they sold over a million dollars worth of products,

06:40

22, 23 year old couple.

06:42

But number two, right now they’re adding 500 women a day

06:45

are coming into their programs,

06:46

and they’re taking these women’s lives

06:47

and radically transforming 'em.

06:49

And the case studies are just insane,

06:51

so for me it’s like, the money’s cool 'cause

us entrepreneurs want to know that but like,

06:54

500 women a day, every single day,

06:56

are coming like clockwork into their programs.

And they are having this huge impact on people’s health

that, it’s just, it’s, it’s like

the coolest thing in the world to watch and to see.

  • Well my, the crazy thing is

so many people have beautiful ideas.

I knew early in my career, my biggest thing was

I had these skills, these abilities and talents,

certain things, you know, god gives you

07:13

and certain things you develop along the way.

And, but I realized my ideas were gonna die on my lips

unless I learned how to market, you know?

07:19

That I was not gonna change millions of people’s lives

07:21

unless I could figure out how to do that as well.

07:24

And, you know, mine was so much trial-and-error

07:26

and there was no internet, per se, that’s how ancient I am.
